The Rupert River is a spectacular northern river that flows into the eastern side of James Bay in northern Quebec (Canada). It can be reached by traveling up the James Bay Road. It can also be seen farther upstream along the North Road.

However, this wild and free giant among rivers is scheduled to be DIVERTED in the fall of 2009 by Hydro Quebec, in order to quench our insatiable thirst for electricity.

** THE RUPERT RIVER DIVERSION **

Enjoy this spectacular wild river while you can!! A deal was negotiated between the Quebec Government and the Grand Council of the Crees of Quebec in October 2001 which opened the way for the Rupert River to be diverted for a hydro-electric power project by Quebec Hydro - part of the controversial James Bay II project.

Construction began in 2007 and according to the current schedule, the diversion of the Rupert River will become operational late 2009.

The deal was approved by the Cree in Feb 2002.

It must be noted that Native People have traditionally seen themselves as custodians of the Earth, a role given to them by the Creator.
